UX Designer
I worked as the lead UX Designer for a quarter during my junior year for Blip LLC , an energy startup founded by Kellogg Business School students. Blip is a suitcase-sized battery that people can use to save money on their electricity bill. I worked on the UX for Blip's product website as well as its desktop application for users. My primary projects were designing an onboarding wizard and a user dashboard for the desktop app.
What I loved about this project:
This was my first UX project that was actually implemented by software developers for a company. Having the opportunity to work with a dev team was invaluable because I got feedback about the engineering feasibility of my designs. It was also rewarding to see my designs live on the company's website and know that real customers were using them.

Optional steps
I designed an Onboarding Wizard for new blip users to connect their blip devices and set up their accounts. My design was targeted towards new users who likely have little familiarity with utility terminology and are looking to set up their device quickly and move on with their day. The primary goal of the design is to encourage completion, so streamlined and clear design were the main principles I had in mind while designing.

In order to encourage completion, a key design feature I implemented was the progress bar signaling how many steps are left in the onboarding process and visually rewarding progress that has been made. Through user testing, I was able to design the Wizard to include as few steps as possible by understanding which steps could be made optional or should only be displayed for specific user types.

Another design decision I made was making some steps optional and allowing users to go back to give users flexibility while onboarding. I included text to inform users what the benefit of completing optional steps would be, but ultimately allowing them to decide whether or not to complete these steps to keep onboarding as simple and hassle-free as the user wants it to be.
User Dashboard Homepage
User Dashboard
I redesigned the existing user dashboard, which displays customers’ savings, allows them to toggle between various device modes, and displays utility information and alerts. The goal of the dashboard is to provide the user with the most important information they may wish to see, while giving them control over functionality of their device. Since most users value bill savings most highly, their savings are displayed most prominently on the screen.

The Dashboard Home displays the most important functions of the dashboard, including a visual savings indicator and the option to toggle to resiliency mode. Resiliency Mode allows users to toggle between the option to manually control their device in case of a power outage, or to let blip do all the work. My Savings visually displays users with their bill savings over time, encouraging them to continue saving with blip.

I created an “Articles” tab on the company website, where users can learn in further detail about how blip devices work, as well as hear personal stories from the company’s founders about blip.
